Why are navel oranges called navel oranges? You know, I've been on this planet for some time now, eating oranges when I can get them, but until today I had no idea why navel oranges where called navel oranges.
I honestly thought it had something to do with them being supplied to the navy to fight scurvy hundreds of years ago. Nope.
Turns out that it is becuase the little oranges inside of the orange makes it look like they have a belly button or a navel. All these years and we could have been calling them belly button oranges. Kinda gives new meaning the biblical term fruit of the loins. (Hey the belly button is close to the loins, right).
I suppose it would offend some people if we all started calling them belly button fruit, but I'm pretty sure that I'm going to start.
